May: Queer TV Theory

Even though we’re known for our attention to film theory, we know that queer representation matters across all media. So for one month out of the year, we turn our critical eyes to the small screen for what we like to call Queer Television Theory 101!

This month, our professors will take a specific episode of TV from their youth that made a significant impression upon their queer development. Maybe it was the big, fat lesbian kiss that happened on Roseanne! Maybe it was the episode of Will & Grace where Will and Jack woke up in bed together! Or maybe it’s, well, any single episode of Steven Universe!

Television wasn’t always as accepting of queer characters as it is today, so the times we did see ourselves on screen stood out more than usual. Together, we’re going to spend the evening exploring some of those “very special episodes” that held meaning for our professors. We promise it’ll be a night of nostalgia, celebration, and laughs.

Doors open at 7:00pm, show starts at 7:30pm. Always free and welcoming to everyone! And now ASL interpreted!

We’ll be joined by our friends from Reverie Books. And stick around afterwards for Mochi Mochi, Austin’s premiere anime-themed drag show!
